Why Buy a Moses Basket?
Deciding whether or not to buy a Moses Basket is a tricky decision for all parents, especially those expecting their first baby.
To ensure you make the right decision for you and your new arrival, we have brought together everything you need to know about Moses Baskets, including:
Where should my baby sleep?
As soon as your little one is born, they need somewhere safe and cosy to sleep. Many parents prefer to keep their newborn in their bedroom, close to them, and this is recommended for the first six months, as it is comforting for your baby and allows you to respond quickly to their calls.
However, your baby will be sleeping during the day as well as in the evenings, so it is important that you have somewhere for them to sleep, no matter what room of the house you are in.
Moses Baskets are the ideal solution and a great starter bed for your baby; not only do they create a cosy space for your little one to sleep, but they are small enough to fit in your bedroom.
They are also easy to transport from room to room. No matter where you are, your baby can sleep by your side and contribute to your peace of mind.
Tip: It’s a good idea to buy a room thermometer to ensure the baby’s room is kept between 16° and 20°C (60° and 68°F).
How long can I use a Moses Basket for?
Moses Baskets are a popular choice for newborns and can be used for around 4 months, depending on the weight, length and mobility of your little one.
Izziwotnot’s range of Moses Baskets are suitable for babies with a weight of 9kg and below.
Usually, when they are able to pull themselves up, roll over or push themselves up on their hands and knees, it is time to make the move to a Cot Bed.
To do this, it’s a good idea to place the basket in the cot for a few days as this will help ease the transition.
Do I need to buy bedding?
We recommend that you have at least two sets of all bedding. This is so that, when one set is being washed, you have another set that can be used.
When you buy a Moses Basket from Izziwotnot, you also receive dressings and a coverlet, which means the only additional items you would require are flat sheets, fitted sheets and blankets.

BEDDING TIP: Our coverlet is suitable from birth and big enough (unlike some others on the market) to use to tuck your baby in. We however recommend sheets and blankets are used at night to get your baby tucked in safely and securely at the right temperature.
Buying a Moses Basket Mattress
Buying a good mattress will improve your baby’s sleep and support their bones during growth, which is extremely important in their first few months when there is a greater risk of SIDS.
The best Moses Basket Mattress will tick these five boxes:
- Clean and dry
We take your baby’s safety seriously, which is why our mattresses adhere to these fundamental standards.
All of our Moses Baskets come with our supportive foam mattress with a sealed waterproof PEVA cover.
PEVA is a safe material and, unlike PVC, free from chlorine. Using this as a cover has several benefits that make it a great choice for your mattress:
- As well as being waterproof, it can be easily wiped clean with a mild disinfectant
- To prevent moisture and dust reaching the fillings and causing allergies, it is heat sealed at the edges
- There are no sewn seams, which prevents dust and dirt from getting trapped in the mattress
Suitable for both wicker and maize baskets, your little one can enjoy a safe and comfortable sleep with our waterproof mattress.
SAFETY TIP: If you are offered a second hand basket, we recommend buying a new mattress. This way you can guarantee your baby will enjoy a clean, supported and safe sleep.

Do I need a Moses Basket Stand?
This is completely down to personal preference and isn’t essential.
We always recommend getting a stand because they put the basket at a more convenient height and make it easier to check on your little one. They also make it easier to guarantee the basket is placed and kept on a flat surface.
On days where you don’t need the stand or want to transport it elsewhere, they fold away for easy storage and transportation.
If you decide you want a stand, the next stage is choosing from the various designs. At Izziwotnot we offer two styles of stand, stand and rocking, each of which is designed with a sturdy wooden frame and reliable metal base. These are available in three colours (natural, mahogany and white, with a grey stand coming soon!) to co-ordinate with your wicker basket.
Our rocking stand offers your baby the soothing quality of a rocking motion that gently helps them to sleep. The stylish curvaceous stand will keep your little one safe and secure, whilst the rocking motion ensures your little one sleeps soundly.

Benefits of a Moses basket
If you’re looking for a portable and safe sleeping solution for your little one, Moses Baskets are an ideal choice.
Your baby will be able to lay out flat, rather than being kept in a semi-upright position for long periods of time as they would be whilst napping in a car seat, for example. This flat position helps them develop their spine so they are able to stretch out straight.
Other benefits include:
- Create a safe, cosy and snug sleeping space
- Lightweight and small in size, they don’t take up too much room
- Easy to move around so you can keep a close eye on your baby
- Can be rested on the floor, or raised up with a stand
We recommend looking for baskets with fabric hoods that will protect your little one’s skin whilst keeping them shaded and cool.
As well keeping the sun out of their eyes and off their skin, canopies come in handy when it’s your baby’s nap time and you want to make the room darker.

Moses Basket Safety
When choosing where to position your Moses Basket in your room, consider the following:
- Keep the basket away from any radiators or other heat sources, or guarantee they are turned off or down to their lowest setting
- Avoid placing the Basket next to windows, or ensure they are draught-free and can be locked from the inside
- Anticipate where the sun rises and, if there are areas of the room that get hot in the morning, keep your baby out of them
- Make sure any dangling cords or items that could be grabbed and pulled down are out of reach
- Don’t put your baby to sleep under shelving that could potentially fall on or near them
- Remember the safest position for your baby to sleep is on their back, not on their front or side
SAFETY TIP: We do not recommend that you carry your basket with your baby inside. If your little one is asleep and you need to transport them to a different room whilst they are inside, always carry the basket with the handles together and with one hand, and place the other hand underneath the basket for support.
NEVER carry your basket downstairs with a baby inside. If you are concerned about moving the basket with your baby inside, do not do it. Instead, take your little one out and move them separately.
